Mr. Zhang’s report will give a brief overview of the NLC’s project on collaborative preservation of Chinese rare books overseas with a focus on the compilation of The Union Catalog of Chinese Rare Books in North America. He will also introduce the recent publications of Reprints of Chinese Rare Books (Overseas Edition) and Chinese Rare Books Series. Finally he will update the preparation for the “Workshop on Appraisal and Preservation of Chinese Rare Books for North American Librarians.”

UW, UBC Receive Collaborative Chinese Cataloging Grant

University of Washington and University of British Columbia Libraries’ Collaborative Chinese Cataloging Project Receives CLIR 2013 Grant

We are very pleased to share the good news that the University of Washington Libraries has been selected to receive a 2013 Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant in the amount of $183,500 to support the project “Discovering Modern China: University of Washington (UW) & University of British Columbia (UBC) Collections.” Our project is one of the 22 selected from a total of 75 applications.

This is an international collaborative project to catalog the special Chinese language materials at the UW East Asia and the UBC Asian Library. Scheduled to start on June 1, 2014, the project will be completed in 18 months. The project will recruit two professional catalogers specializing in classic and modern Chinese to be based at UBC and UW respectively. The project will also recruit one Chinese rare-book specialist who will spend time to assess the special collections at each institution. UW and UBC libraries will share the expertise of the project staff through regular online meetings, site visits, and exchange. The project will make accessible to scholars worldwide up to 2,000 special Chinese publications, including pre-modern texts and some rare books, as well as rare publications of the Chinese Republican Era.

Our project is the first of only two international collaborative projects that CLIR (Council on Library and Information Resources) has funded. We look forward to a successful collaboration between our institutions through this exciting project.

Webinar on Chinese Rare Book Cataloging

• Title: Webinar on Chinese Rare Book Cataloging: Descriptive cataloging focus 
• Date & Time: Wednesday, June 13, 2:30-4:30 pm (EDT)/11:30-1:30 (PDT) –2 hours

• Presentation language: CHINESE 

Description: This session will help catalogers who are responsible for Chinese materials cataloging to get familiarized with Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine-Readable Form. This session will focus on descriptive cataloging rather than identifying Chinese rare book versions (some of important version related concepts will be briefly mentioned). The presenter will go through MARC fields with samples of Chinese rare books. Explanations will particularly focus on how to determine and select relevant bibliographic information for each field from the book in hand, and from other reference books when cataloging a Chinese rare book, and how to make notes in 5xx field. 

Due to a number of special terms in Chinese rare books this session will be presented in Chinese.

Please notice that the Japanese page is available by clicking "日本語ページ" link in the menu bar right beneath the Directory name. We hope that the Directory will gradually include more information in Japanese also.

ディレクトリ公開のお知らせ

このたび人間文化研究機構 国文学研究資料館では、北米日本古典籍所蔵機関ディレクトリの公開に向けた準備が整いましたので、二〇一一年一二月下旬を目途に当館のウェブサイトから発信することになりました。ご承知のように、本ディレクトリは、北米を中心とする、日本の古典籍やその他の文化資料を所蔵する大学図書館、美術館などの機関について、コレクションの概要やコンタクト方法などの情報を集約したものです。本ディレクトリの公開によって、今後、各所蔵機関の日本資料コレクションが日本及び世界各国の研究者、学生などによって、さらに有効活用されることが期待されます。

現段階では、英語表記が基本で、日本語は不十分ですが、情報のリニューアルとともに、言語表記の面も追々充実を図って行きたいと思います。また、北米以外では、欧州の参加機関が少数参加しているに過ぎませんが、これも徐々に拡大していければと願っています。どうか今後ともご協力のほど、お願い申し上げます。

最後に、本ディレクトリの公開が、もっぱらこれまで長い間、作成に携わって来られた、東アジア図書館協議会（CEAL）の日本資料委員会の元に組織された日本古典籍小委員会の皆様のご尽力と、各所蔵機関のご協力の賜物であること、またシステムについては、当館の事業部が担当させていただきましたことをお断りし、関係各位には、この場を借りて厚く御礼申し上げます。
