CEAL 2016 in Seattle: Final Program
CEAL 2016 Program
Dear CEAL members,
Following up on my announcement of the CEAL 2016 program schedule last year, the final schedule has been posted on the CEAL website for our 2016 meeting in Seattle: East Asian Studies Librarians: Current Realities/Future Trajectories.
See: http://www.eastasianlib.org/CEAL/AnnualMeeting/CEALMeetingSchedule/CEAL2016Schedule.pdf
Please note, once again, some of the new features this year!
CEAL Reception (free entry to CEAL members) will be TUESDAY evening, not Wednesday evening as in past years. Venue: University of Washington campus.
Tours of the University of Washington Libraries and the UW East Asia Library will held prior to the reception on Tuesday.
We are trying to give you more options with “concurrent sessions” to be held on Wednesday evening. Please select the session of most interest to attend in the two time slots.
The plenary will feature the first “Presidential Panel,” as well as the first “CEAL Debate” between President Ellen Hammond and Vice-President/President-Elect Jim Cheng.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Seattle.
Best,
Ellen

Journal of East Asian Libraries: Vote on Change of Publishing Format
Task Force Final Report (PDF) | Gail King's Presentation
To All CEAL Members:
The CEAL Executive Board has been involved in discussions about the format of the Journal of East Asian Libraries since last year. As Past-President Peter Zhou announced during the Business Plenary at the CEAL meeting in Philadelphia, the Executive Board made a decision to ask CEAL members their opinion on this issue. Below is a summary explaining the actions of the Executive Board to date.
Linked above is a copy of the final report of the task force. Pages one and two of the report present the issues and the pros and cons of each approach. Please take the time to review this report and if you have any questions, send them to Gail King (gail_king@byu.edu) or Ellen Hammond (ellen.hammond@yale.edu). For further information, please also consult Gail King’s PowerPoint presentation at the CEAL meeting, also linked above.
The announcement to open the voting will take place on May 1 and the process will be similar to that for CEAL elections (that is, online voting).
I want to thank Gail King and Peter Zhou for their leadership on this issue and also recognize the contributions of the other Task Force Members: Hee-Sook Shin, Vickie Doll, Chengzhi Wang, and Joy Kim. The Task Force members did an exemplary job investigating the issues.
Best regards,
Ellen Hammond

CEAL Election Notice
Dear CEAL members,
With this year’s CEAL meeting fast approaching, we will
soon be sending out ballots to fill two positions on the Executive Board. In
order to ensure that you will be able to participate in the voting, you must be
a current member, i.e. you must have already paid membership dues to both the
Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and the Council on East Asian Libraries
(CEAL). If you are not certain of your membership status, you can easily check
by going to the “Join CEAL” website:
Follow the instructions for confirming your current
membership. If you find that you are not current, there is still time to renew your
membership in time for this year’s election, but you will have to update your
membership by next Friday (February 8th), at 2:00pm PST.
This year’s meeting in San Diego promises to be of
particular interest. I hope to see you all there.

Help Wanted With Website, Directory, Blogs, Etc
Dear CEAL Members (or potential members):
As Chair of the CEAL Library Technology Committee (CLT; currently staffed only by me!), I am looking for help with various aspects of the CEAL website: Server routine backups; CEAL Directory MS Access database update; Blog Update (CEAL News and CEAL Jobs). In addition, I may need help with technical support for presenters at the annual meeting. The work is mostly routine, and not difficult if you have OR are willing to learn some basic skills. I am willing and able to help you learn.
Why? For one thing, my tenure as CEAL Library Technology Chair expires in about 20 months (March 2014). If requested, I may continue after that (the CLT chair position is appointed by the Executive Board). In any case, it would be good for CEAL to have a CLT backup who is at least familiar with the basics.
Are you interested? It's fun (if you like this sort of thing!) It looks good on your resume!
Please email or phone me (contact info below).

Executive Board Organizational Calendar
The CEAL Executive Board has created an organizational calendar, where the regular activities of Executive Board members are listed chronologically. EB members and CEAL general membership are welcome to consult this calendar, available in PDF on the CEAL website, as they make plans for CEAL events such as the annual meeting, the publication of JEAL, planning for elections, etc. The Calendar is intended to create a widely available "corporate memory" for CEAL, providing information about what needs to be done, and when.
The new Organizational Calendar page (with the calendar available in PDF) is here. As the chair of the EB Calendar task force, I would be happy to receive questions about the calendar and suggestions for other events to include.

Rob

Online CEAL Directory Changes
Users of the online CEAL Directory will notice a few recent changes (please see below). Please note that the CEAL Membership Committee, headed by Hikaru Nakano, relies on "Designated Updaters" at institutions to keep the information in the CEAL Directory fresh.
Rob Britt
Chair, Library Technology Committee
- "Search Personnel" has changed to "Search People" (I thought it sounded friendlier)
- The "Search People" page now has two separate search boxes: One for standard searching by name or other data, and another for searching specific groups within the CEAL Directory: CEAL Members, AAS Members, Designated Updaters, etc. The group searches provide a quick and easy listing, and the new separate boxes by search type are very convenient and easy to understand. Please see the screenshot below.
- CEAL Treasurer Ai-lin Yang has recently updated the database with the latest information on CEAL and AAS Membership.

CEAL Election 2012
Dear CEAL Members,
I am excited to announce the upcoming CEAL election! This year we will elect representatives to
fill the following important positions:
- Vice President/President Elect (2012-2014)
- Secretary (2012-2015)
- Treasurer (2012-2015)
- Members at Large (two positions) (2012-2015)
We are fortunate to have a slate of superb candidates
this year. I thank the candidates for
their willingness to stand for election.
As you consider the candidates’ qualifications for their respective
duties, you may wish to consult the CEAL Bylaws at: http://www.eastasianlib.org/CEAL/Bylaws/CEALbylaws.pdf
On Monday, February 13th , current CEAL members (defined
as AAS members who pay CEAL membership dues) will receive an e-mail from Rob
Britt, Technology Committee Chair, transmitting CEAL Secretary Beth Katzoff’s
letter with a link to the online ballot. While membership can be renewed at any
time, please note that the voters list has already been finalized for this
election. If you believe that you are a
current CEAL member and did not receive the online ballot on Monday, February
13th, please send a message to both Ai-lin Yang, Treasurer <ayang1@stanford.edu> and Hikaru
Nakano, Membership Committee Chair <hiknaka@uflib.ufl.edu>. The last day to cast your vote will be Monday, March 5th.
It may not be obvious, but preparing for an election
takes a great deal of hard work by many people behind the scenes. I congratulate and thank the Election
Committee (Ying Zhang, Chair, Setsuko Noguchi, Mikyung Kang, and ex-officio
members, Peter Zhou, Beth Katzoff, and myself) for successfully recruiting this
excellent slate of candidates. As usual,
Ai-lin Yang and Hikaru Nakano also worked hard verifying and updating the
membership records, as did Rob Britt, who prepared the online ballot and the
voters list.
Thank you in advance for your participation in the
election! The election results will be
announced at the Plenary I (Business) meeting on March 14th at the Toronto, Canada AAS / CEAL conference,
and after the conference, on Eastlib and the CEAL News blog (http://cealnews.blogspot.com/).
