New: CEAL Technical Services Expertise List

Expertise List | Expertise Survey | CTP

Dear Colleagues,
At the 2013 CEAL Annual Meeting, the idea was raised that the Committee on Technical Processing (CTP) should gather cataloging expertise information from CEAL members, so that it would be easier for CEAL members to find colleagues with special skills for consultation or collaboration. As a result, the Committee on Technical Processing worked with the Membership Committee to gather information on the technical services expertise of CEAL members.

We are pleased to announce that the survey results are available from the link below. We would like to thank Rob Britt (Library Technology Committee) for providing the technical support.
CEAL Technical Services Expertise List
The survey results will also be linked on the CTP webpage.

We hope this list will be a valuable resource for colleagues seeking technical services expertise among the CEAL membership.

We will keep the survey open so anyone who wants to be included or wants to update information can do so by clicking here. Please note that we will continue to maintain this list.

Please send any questions or correction requests to Mieko Mazza and Keiko Suzuki.

Thank you again for responding to the cataloging expertise survey.

Mentorship Program: Call for Participants

Dear CEAL colleagues:

The Membership Committee is actively soliciting volunteers and participants (mentors and mentees) for our Mentorship Program. The program was created to help match experienced East Asian librarians (mentors) with interested mentees, which includes but not limits to junior librarians and/or students. We not only match new or junior librarians with experienced librarians, but also arrange senior librarians for mid-career librarians who may have a specific objective. We welcome participations and suggestions from everyone. We are also planning “meet and greet” in Tronto.
For more information please go to see the Membership Committee’s website at: http://www.eastasianlib.org/cmb/index.htm

In order to update the current participants’ activities, please let Yunah Sung know if your mentorship is active. If you are not participate yet and interested in, please send an application form to at kazuko@uky.edu

Regards,
Kazuko Hoki

3. “Get together! Paras!” hosted by Tomoko Kitayama Please join us as we start a conversation on the role of paraprofessionals and other non-librarian workers in Asia-related libraries. This is an opportunity for paraprofessionals and others to get to know each other and discuss such topics as: - Who are “paraprofessionals” in this field? What are common qualifications and certifications required for this role?
  • What do we do? How does our work compliment and differ with professional librarians?
  • How do we get training? What kind of expertise do we have?
  • How do we pursue career development?
  • What are the big issues facing paraprofessionals at this time?
  • What is the future of paraprofessional work?

We welcome non-East Asian librarians’ and paraprofessionals’ participation as well. If you have any questions, please email tomoko.kitayama@ubc.ca.

The committee's goal is provide CEAL members with a place to discuss, exchange, and learn new ideas and practices as such. So, these are rather informal and inviting. So, please feel free to just stop by. Just bring your body! Please also spread the word about this initiative to your colleagues who may have an interest in these issues.

If you have any general questions, please contact Hikaru Nakano at hnakano@ufl.edu

We look forward to seeing you in Toronto

Online CEAL Directory Changes

Users of the online CEAL Directory will notice a few recent changes (please see below). Please note that the CEAL Membership Committee, headed by Hikaru Nakano, relies on "Designated Updaters" at institutions to keep the information in the CEAL Directory fresh.
  • "Search Personnel" has changed to "Search People" (I thought it sounded friendlier)
  • The "Search People" page now has two separate search boxes: One for standard searching by name or other data, and another for searching specific groups within the CEAL Directory: CEAL Members, AAS Members, Designated Updaters, etc. The group searches provide a quick and easy listing, and the new separate boxes by search type are very convenient and easy to understand. Please see the screenshot below.
  • CEAL Treasurer Ai-lin Yang has recently updated the database with the latest information on CEAL and AAS Membership.
Let me know if you have questions or concerns.
