Joining or Renewing CEAL Membership is a 2-step Process

- Before submitting the CEAL membership application form, please join or renew membership of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS).
- Please make a note of your AAS# and membership expiration date as you need to put them on the application form and your check. This is very important, if you are not a valid AAS member, your CEAL membership application WILL NOT be processed.
Step 2) Submit the Application Form and Dues
- Print out the CEAL Membership Application PDF form or Word version of the form, and fill it in.
- Write a check or money order for thirty dollars ($30), payable to "The Association for Asian Studies Inc." Please write your AAS# and AAS membership expiration date on the upper right corner of the check.

Seeking Nominations for NCC Council Members
During 2017 the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (the NCC) will fill three elected positions, two for librarians and one for a social sciences faculty member. NCC Council Members are elected for three-year terms, in these cases the terms will run from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020. Once elected members will be expected to take part in NCC Committees and Working Groups and are likely to be asked to co-chair one or more such groups.
As is required by its by-laws, the NCC seeks to include among Council members faculty and librarians from diverse regions of the country, from institutions of varying size, and from Japanese and East Asian studies programs with a range of strengths and foci. Selection of candidates will, therefore, take into consideration current representation on those committees in filling these positions. A list of the current Council Members and is contained in the About NCC section of the website at http://guides.nccjapan.org/content.php?pid=246207&sid=2033554. A brief description of positions follows:
NCC Elected Librarian Council Members: The two librarian positions to be filled in 2017 are for librarian members from a range of institutions and regions, and from institutions with collections of all sizes both those broadly covering Japan and East Asia and those that may be more specialized. Past experience as a member of an NCC committee or working group or a CEAL committee, as well as other service to the field is desirable.
NCC Elected Social Sciences Faculty Member: Elected faculty members are chosen to represent not only a range of institutions and regions but also to represent a diversity of disciplines, time periods and research methodologies. The social science faculty member may come from any field of social sciences and must have an active engagement with libraries and library-related issues. An interest in digital scholarship and participation in disciplinary and field wide service is also of important consideration.
To propose a candidate for one of these positions, please send an email nomination by March 20, 2017 to NCC Chair Setsuko Noguchi snoguchi@princeton.edu and to NCC Executive Director Victoria Bestor at vbestor@fas.harvard.edu. Call for Application: Sheila Suen Lai Research Grant
Purpose:
The purpose of Sheila Suen Lai Research Grant (hereinafter ‘Lai’s Grant’) is to encourage CALA members to engage in research activities that contribute towards library and information science, and related to Chinese American Librarianship particularly.
An award in the amount of $1,000 will be granted to the winner(s). Lai’s Grant may be used for conducting research projects, attending research related conferences and workshops, conducting research workshops and programs, assisting in research writing, or other activities not inconsistent with the general purpose of the award. Lai’s Grant shall not be used for personal use or for attending professional association conferences, such as ALA or CALA.

- The award recipient shall be a CALA member for at least 5 consecutive years from the date of the award.
- The award recipient shall volunteer for CALA committees and taskforces.
- The award recipient shall receive an electronic certificate upon request.
- Monetary award shall be awarded after the awardee has fulfilled the required obligations.
- The award recipient shall contribute their time and talents to CALA.
Eligible applicants for Lai’s Grant must:
- Be a current CALA member in good standing
- Have at least an MLS degree
- Be currently employed in a professional level position
- Have been a CALA member for at least one year prior to submitting an application
- Maintain CALA membership status throughout the duration of the use of the award
- Have not received any other CALA grant or award in the same year as the Lai’s Grant
A complete application must consist of the following:
- A cover letter
- A statement of intended research activities and plans (no more than five pages in length)
- A curriculum vitae
- Two (2) letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s research credentials
