Executive Board Organizational Calendar

The CEAL Executive Board has created an organizational calendar, where the regular activities of Executive Board members are listed chronologically. EB members and CEAL general membership are welcome to consult this calendar, available in PDF on the CEAL website, as they make plans for CEAL events such as the annual meeting, the publication of JEAL, planning for elections, etc. The Calendar is intended to create a widely available "corporate memory" for CEAL, providing information about what needs to be done, and when.

The new Organizational Calendar page (with the calendar available in PDF) is here. As the chair of the EB Calendar task force, I would be happy to receive questions about the calendar and suggestions for other events to include.

Regards,
Rob

Webinar on Chinese Rare Book Cataloging

Dear all,
The CEAL Committee on Technical Processing is pleased to host the following webinar. We look forward to see you in the session. Instruction on login to the webinar will be send to the registered participants by Monday, June 11, 2012.
  • Title: Webinar on Chinese Rare Book Cataloging: Descriptive cataloging focus
  • Date & Time: Wednesday, June 13, 2:30-4:30 pm (EDT)/11:30-1:30 (PDT) –2 hours
  • Presenter: Haihui Zhang, University of Pittsburgh
  • Presentation language: CHINESE
Description: This session will help catalogers who are responsible for Chinese materials cataloging to get familiarized with Cataloging Guidelines for Creating Chinese Rare Book Records in Machine-Readable Form. This session will focus on descriptive cataloging rather than identifying Chinese rare book versions (some of important version related concepts will be briefly mentioned). The presenter will go through MARC fields with samples of Chinese rare books. Explanations will particularly focus on how to determine and select relevant bibliographic information for each field from the book in hand, and from other reference books when cataloging a Chinese rare book, and how to make notes in 5xx field.

Due to a number of special terms in Chinese rare books this session will be presented in Chinese.

Registration fee: Free
Registration deadline: Friday, June 8, 2012

Library Science Study in China

2012 Trip to China and LIS Study Program Opportunities

Are you interested in going to China this summer, learning about information technology, and visiting some of China's most magnificent sites?

If you are interested, then the 2-week summer program from the information and library science school at Southern Connecticut State University may be for you. The course is following up on previous study abroad programs and opening up enrollment to graduates and students from other schools. Participants fly out of JFK airport on July 11 and return July 24. The trip cost is $3215, which includes round trip air fare from JFK, bed and breakfast at the International dormitory of a Beijing university, some additional meals and all tours, including the National Library, National Science Library, Peking University Library, as well as library and information science schools in Beijing. Cultural tours provided to the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs, and The Temple of Heaven.

In addition, if you are interested in taking an ALA-approved graduate school course, you may enroll as a special graduate student at Southern Connecticut State University¹s School of Information and Library Sciences. The course number and title: ILS 635: Seminar of International & Comparative Librarianship. Not including the course, the trip and tours are also open to undergraduates and high school graduates above age 18.

To reserve a spot, email Dr. Yan Q. Liu, liuy1@southernct.edu. For more information about trip and course, plus, videos from 2011, go to: http://home.southernct.edu/~liuy1/liu/general_information.html.

Payment Schedule: This program fee does not include tuition and medical care while abroad, laundry, meals, snacks, personal items, recreational activities, souvenirs or any additional expenses that alter itinerary or
arrangements. The cost of obtaining a valid passport, visa and textbooks are also participants' responsibility. Dining is very reasonable in China; plan to spend about $15 to $25 per day on meals.

A non-refundable deposit $500 (check or payment to ³SCSU Program in China²) is due upon application. This guarantees your participation in the program and reserves your room. A second payment of $2000 is due on

New CEAL Logo Adopted

Dear CEAL Colleagues:
Last August, the CEAL Executive Board set up a committee to solicit different designs
for a new CEAL logo. The committee has worked diligently to come up with a design and
presented the final choices to CEAL membership to vote for. I am very pleased to announce
that 73% of responding members voted in favor of Shirin Eshghi’s design below. It is now
the official logo for CEAL.
