This is an opportunity for paraprofessionals and others to get to know each other and discuss such topics as: - Who are “paraprofessionals” in this field? What are common qualifications and certifications required for this role?
  • What do we do? How does our work compliment and differ with professional librarians?
  • How do we get training? What kind of expertise do we have?
  • How do we pursue career development?
  • What are the big issues facing paraprofessionals at this time?
  • What is the future of paraprofessional work?

We welcome non-East Asian librarians’ and paraprofessionals’ participation as well. If you have any questions, please email tomoko.kitayama@ubc.ca.

The committee's goal is provide CEAL members with a place to discuss, exchange, and learn new ideas and practices as such. So, these are rather informal and inviting. So, please feel free to just stop by. Just bring your body! Please also spread the word about this initiative to your colleagues who may have an interest in these issues.

If you have any general questions, please contact Hikaru Nakano at hnakano@ufl.edu

We look forward to seeing you in Toronto

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of Membership Committee, I am calling for speakers for our Roundtable Discussion at this year’s CEAL/AAS Conference (9:30pm – 11:00pm, Wednesday March 14th). The particular roundtable I will be hosting is on the theme of Mobile Technologies/Social Media and Their Applications in the Library. If you have any level of work experience in this area and would like to share and exchange ideas with interested colleagues, please contact me off the list for becoming one of our speakers at the roundtable. For those who are new, the roundtable is a very casual, informal opportunity for information sharing and free discussion, led by our appointed speakers and monitored by the host. There will be no formal presentation or lecture.

Plenary Program Agenda (Update)

Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL)
Association for Asian Studies
Annual Meeting, Toronto, Canada, March 12–18, 2012

Organizational Changes in Research Libraries and
Their Impact on East Asian Collections:
CEAL’s Strategic Position
Wednesday March 14, 2012

For almost a decade, we have been witnessing major organizational changes in research libraries. Unfortunately, East Asian libraries sometimes are on the receiving end of these changes. Decision makers do not always seek the opinions of CEAL members, even though their decisions will inevitably impact how the libraries operate. This year’s plenary program aims to provide a study of some of the organizational changes impacting East Asian libraries in North America, in order to help CEAL members take the initiative to formulate a strategic position on issues critical to our services and operations.
