Call for Application: Sheila Suen Lai Research Grant

Purpose:
The purpose of Sheila Suen Lai Research Grant (hereinafter ‘Lai’s Grant’) is to encourage CALA members to engage in research activities that contribute towards library and information science, and related to Chinese American Librarianship particularly.
An award in the amount of $1,000 will be granted to the winner(s). Lai’s Grant may be used for conducting research projects, attending research related conferences and workshops, conducting research workshops and programs, assisting in research writing, or other activities not inconsistent with the general purpose of the award. Lai’s Grant shall not be used for personal use or for attending professional association conferences, such as ALA or CALA.

Commitment:

1. The award recipient shall submit a final report to CALA’s Executive Director EC detailing the outcome and performance of the specific project within one month of the project completion.
2. The award recipient shall participate in at least 80% of the CALA events and activities especially during the ALA Midwinter and Annual meetings.
3. The award recipient shall be a CALA member for at least 5 consecutive years from the date of the award.
4. The award recipient shall volunteer for CALA committees and taskforces.
5. The award recipient shall receive an electronic certificate upon request.
6. Monetary award shall be awarded after the awardee has fulfilled the required obligations.
7. The award recipient shall contribute their time and talents to CALA.

Eligible applicants for Lai’s Grant must:

1. Be a current CALA member in good standing
2. Have at least an MLS degree
3. Be currently employed in a professional level position
4. Have been a CALA member for at least one year prior to submitting an application
5. Maintain CALA membership status throughout the duration of the use of the award
6. Have not received any other CALA grant or award in the same year as the Lai’s Grant

A complete application must consist of the following:

1. A cover letter
2. A statement of intended research activities and plans (no more than five pages in length)
3. A curriculum vitae
4. Two (2) letters of reference attesting to the applicant’s research credentials

Deadline:
To apply, send the complete application to the Chair of the Sheila Lai Research Grant Award Committee by March 3, 2017. The award recipient will be announced via an official CALA press release.

Membership Renewal: CEAL and AAS -- 2nd Notice -- DEADLINE - 1/31/2017

Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving break!

This message is our 2nd call for CEAL and AAS membership renewal. Deadline is 1/31/2017. Please read the following steps carefully as we added a new procedure and an online payment option this year. They are highlighted in yellow.

Joining/renewing CEAL is a 2-step process (http://www.eastasianlib.org/cmb/joinceal.htm)

Step 1) Join/renew AAS

• Before submitting the CEAL membership application form, please join or renew membership of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS). 
• Please make a note of your AAS# and membership expiration date as you need to put them on the application form and your check. This is very important, if you are not a valid AAS members, your CEAL membership application WILL NOT be processed.

Step 2) Submit the Application Form and Dues

• Print out the CEAL Membership Application PDF form or Word version of the form, and fill it in.
• Write a check or money order for thirty dollars ($30), payable to "The Association for Asian Studies Inc." Please write your AAS# and AAS membership expiration date on the upper right corner of the check.

Foreign Law Librarians 2017 FCIL Schaffer Grant

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The Foreign, Comparative and International Law Special Interest Section (FCIL-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries is now accepting applications for the 2017 FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians. The Grant subsidizes a foreign law librarian to attend the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), the world's largest law librarian professional organization.

The FCIL Schaffer Grant for the AALL Annual Meeting (http://www.aallnet.org/conference) in Austin, Texas (July 15-18, 2017) provides a waiver of the AALL Annual Meeting full registration fee and a grant of a minimum US $2,000 to assist with accommodations and travel costs.

Applicants must be law librarians or other professionals working in the legal information field, currently employed in countries other than the United States, and with significant responsibility for the organization, preservation, or provision of legal information. The application deadline is December 16, 2016. The Grant Committee will not consider late or incomplete applications. Please note: Grant winners must pay all expenses in advance. Grant awards will only be disbursed at the AALL Annual Meeting.

Doing Digital Scholarship in Japanese Studies: Innovations and Challenges

Hosted by the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources, in conjunction with the University of Toronto Libraries

The workshop aims to examine the critical roles that librarians play in creating and sustaining innovative digital scholarship, to share experience among those who have created successful projects and to motivate librarians to "own" a larger role in the creation and preservation of the digital realm.
Major topics of discussion will include:

• Case studies of projects that build and curate digital collections and content
• Tools and techniques for data visualization and text analysis
• Managing Metadata schema and APIs
• Managing students and volunteers
• Planning for collection scalability and data migration to new platforms
• Long-term preservation and access to digital media
• Best practices for managing rights to digital information
• Strategies for increasing the role of the library as a research partner in emerging areas of scholarship in Japanese studies

Pre-registration is required and workshop space will be limited. A need-based, limited funding support will be available for out-of-town participants. The NCC may be able to cover (shared) accommodation for up to 3 nights (March 12, 13 and 14, 2017) at the Holiday Inn Bloor Yorkville.
