Webinar:Using Collection Analysis Tool for Managing CJK Collections

The OCLC CJK User Group Board is very pleased to receive your positive feedback and interest in the topics of our webinars, and we look forward to seeing your active participation in our next webinar.  Using Collection Analysis Tool for Managing CJK Collections webinar will be held next Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.  Below is the login information for attendees.  Please test to make sure your system is ready to use WebEx in advance.

I.  Webinar login information:
To attend the webinar, you will need a computer, Internet browser, Internet connection, and headphones or speakers to hear the audio through your computer.  The meeting will be conducted using WebEx which will allow you to see the presentation and ask questions to the presenters using chat.

TO ATTEND THE WEBINAR:   Begin 10 minutes prior to the start of the event. 
1.        Join us by clicking on this link:  (see topic/date/link below)
2.        Enter your name and email address.
3.        Click Join Now.  From here you can either read and follow the slides that will be cycling on your computer or read steps 4, 5, and 6 below.
4.        The audio will automatically stream over your computers speakers or headphones.  You can adjust the volume on the audio broadcast box.  It might be necessary to adjust the volume on your computer or headset.
5.        To view slides in full screen mode, at the top of your screen, select ‘View’ followed by ‘Full Screen’.
6.        Use the Chat panel on the right side of the screen to submit a question.  In the ‘Send to’ field, click the drop down arrow and choose ‘All Panelists’.  Type the question in the dialog box.  Click the ‘Send’ button.  We will answer questions at the conclusion of the presentation.

Description: This will be a general introduction to the OCLC Collection Analysis product and how it can be used both for a single institution evaluation and how to identify uniqueness and overlap in collections with other institutions. The instructor will show how to create comparison groups and how to develop comparative analysis by language and subject and point out some of the considerations one should apply, particularly in working with area studies materials such as CJK materials.

Call for nominations -- CEAL Election

Dear CEAL members,

On behalf of the CEAL Election Committee, I am sending you the official call for nomination/self-nomination for two at-large members of the CEAL Executive Board, who will serve a three-year term from 2013 to 2016:
1. The first at-large member position will be open to all eligible CEAL members.
2. The second at-large member position will be open to eligible CEAL members who can represent Korea as their main area of focus, in accordance with CEAL Bylaws Article V(D)(6a).

Serving on the Executive Board is a wonderful opportunity of professional growth and career development. Following the guidance of CEAL Bylaws Article VII,  the Election Committee is committed to ensuring a slate of candidates balanced in geographic representation, collection size, and area specialty (with the specified limitations on the second member-at-large position). We welcome nominations and self-nominations of newer CEAL members whereas encouraging experienced members to continue their valued contribution.

Please feel free to nominate any CEAL member, yourself included, who can make a contribution to the organization in your perspective. Please address your nomination(s) to any of the Election Committee members (contacts listed below) by January 13, 2013. The Election Committee will confirm with nominees that they are current CEAL members and willing to serve.

Columbia University Libraries Research Awards, 2013-14


The Columbia University Libraries (CUL) invites applications from scholars and researchers to a new program designed to facilitate access to Columbia's special and unique collections.  CUL will award ten (10) grants of $2500 each on a competitive basis to researchers who can demonstrate a compelling need to consult CUL holdings for their work.  Participating Columbia libraries and collections include those located on the Morningside Heights campus: the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, The Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary, Butler Library, the Lehman Social Sciences Library, the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, and the Libraries' Global Studies Collections.

Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2013.  Award notifications will be sent to applicants by April 19, 2013 for research conducted at Columbia during the period July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014.

Call for presenters for the joint CTP/CPS session, CEAL 2013


Dear CEAL members,

The theme of the coming 2013 CEAL annual conference in San Diego will be “Open Access and Discovery in the Academic Universe: Next Steps for East Asian Studies Research and Library Development.” The CEAL committees on technical processing and public services will organize a joint panel focusing on the issue of open access and library services. The joint session will last for 1.5 hours. In addition to a guest speaker, we need two more presenters from the CEAL community. If you're interested in giving a presentation on open access and its impact on library services for East Asian studies and librarianship, please submit a proposal to us by December 15. We will review the proposals and announce the results in early January.

Chinese American Law Library Forum (CAFLL 2013)

Chinese and American Forum on Legal Information and Law Libraries (CAFLL)
Shanghai, China, June 10 – 12, 2013

This third international conference is sponsored by the Chinese and American Forum on Legal Information and Law Libraries (CAFLL), a non-profit U.S. organization, in conjunction with a similar organization in China represented by the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL); East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL); Tongji University School of Law; and other prominent law schools in China.  The host for this conference is ECUPL, located in Shanghai, China.  The venue for the meeting will be the Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/shabz-renaissance-shanghai-zhongshan-park-hotel/. 

The Conference will be an opportunity for law librarians and legal information professionals to share experiences and exchange views about legal information access and development and law library management in both the United States and China.  The theme of the conference is Collaboration: Information, Access, and Partnership.  Topics will include public access to legal information, digital technology in libraries, internationalization of shared legal information, and more.

CEAL/CCM 2013 Pre-conference Workshop

Title: Discover the mystery of Chinese local gazetteers: what to get and how to use
Time: 7-10 PM, March 19, 2013
Place: Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, California (Room TBD)

This workshop is to address the needs from librarians who would like to learn about Chinese local gazetteers but have limited access to and use of such materials in their institutions. Contents to be covered include: a brief history of old and new gazetteers; compilation styles and layout; types of gazetteers (administrative levels, subjects, professionals); tools of using gazetteers; and research value of local gazetteers as special primary sources. The workshop will be conducted in English and Chinese. Materials used for training require reading knowledge of Chinese. To allow effective interactions during the workshop, seats are limited to 30.
