2013 LC-CEAL Cataloging Internship Program

Dear CEAL Members,
On behalf of the Committee on Technical Processing, I am pleased to announce that we are going to continue the LC-CEAL Cataloging Internship Program for the year 2013.   CEAL developed this Internship Program partnership with the Library of Congress in order to provide training opportunities to those who may not have access to adequate cataloging training support in their own institutions, or to those who have been assigned to catalog materials in a language with which they are not entirely conversant.  The interns selected will receive substantial training at the Library of Congress from LC’s Catalogers.

Logistics of the Program

  • Up to three internship positions are available in the calendar year 2013, each for up to three months in duration.  Each intern selected will directly negotiate the length of the internship, its timing and general content with the Library of Congress. 
  • The Library of Congress will supply training materials, workspace, training and review by experience catalogers in one or more aspects of cataloging East Asian materials.  All other expenses (travel, lodging, meals, and incidentals) are the responsibility of the intern and/or his/her employer.

  • CEAL will provide each intern with a scholarship of up to $1,000 upon successful completion of the program.

Procedures

The application process will be overseen by the members of the Subcommittee on LC-CEAL Cataloging Internship Program: Yue Shu (Chair), Yoko Kudo and Erica Soonyoung Chang.  The Subcommittee will recommend candidates according to a set of pre-determined selection criteria, and the Library of Congress will make final decisions.  The application deadline is December 17, 2012, and the interns selected will be announced before or at the CEAL meeting in March 2013. 

Selection Criteria

The Subcommittee members will prioritize applications according to the following criteria:

The Candidate:

  • Non-US citizens must be in a visa status that permits them to participate in the program;
  • Is a CEAL member in good standing;
  • Is recommended by his/her employer or university with a formal letter of recommendations;
  • Has significant responsibility for East Asian resources and experience in cataloging;
  • Lacks in-house training support or language proficiency with which he/she isn’t entirely conversant.
 To apply, please fill out the attached application form and send it as an email attachment to all three Subcommittee members:  Yue Shu (shuyuex@si.edu); Yoko Kudo (yokokudo@ucr.edu); and Erica Soonyoung Chang (syoungc@hawaii.edu).  The application deadline is December 17, 2012.  For questions, please feel free to contact the Subcommittee members.

Annual Meeting 2013 Draft Schedule

The draft schedule for the 2013 CEAL annual meeting is now posted on the CEAL website (click to view). The current version is a tentative, planning document. As time for the meeting nears, the information will be updated.

This year, the schedule is posted as an "embedded" MS Excel file. The file can be downloaded and viewed in Excel, either on your desktop or online, in Microsoft SkyDrive. To download, click the Excel icon near the bottom of the window. You can then save a copy, print, etc. The online version (linked above) will be kept up-to-date until the annual meeting.

Dear CEAL Stats Coordinators,

The 2011/2012 CEAL Annual Statistics Online Survey has begun, and the deadline for submission is December 7, 2012 (Central Time, 11:59 p.m.). Online survey forms and instructions are located in the CEAL Statistics Database (http://www.lib.ku.edu/ceal/php/) accessible with institution password log-in. Internet Explorer version 6.0 (or above) is necessary to access database information and to correctly input/update data. To maintain data integrity and accuracy, each institution is responsible for its own data input via online forms.

Here are a few items for your attention:

COMPLETE ALL COLLECTION FORMS AND ALL CELLS IN EACH FORM

Please complete ALL survey FORMS and ALL CELLS in each survey form. Partial input in any form may result in incorrect total sums and, in some cases, may prevent form submission. The application is designed to calculate sums automatically.

ONLINE SRUVEY CLOSES ON DECEMBER 7, 2012 at 11:59 pm Central Time

The ONLINE SURVEY will be CLOSED after the input deadline (Dec. 7, 2012, 11:59 p.m. CT). No late entries will be accepted after the deadline. No changes can be made by any institutional online survey coordinators after the input deadline. Institutions have one week for final proofreading before the reports are run and submitted to the Journal of East Asian Libraries (JEAL). Any correction(s) should be directed to the members of the CEAL Statistics Committee BEFORE the data proofing deadline, Dec. 14, 2012. All data will be final after that date.

Seeking peer reviewers for ACRL/CHOICE publication

Resources for College Libraries (RCL), a publication of ACRL’s Choice magazine and R.R. Bowker, is currently seeking academic librarians and faculty with collection development and/or teaching experience to participate in our peer review process. Available online at http://rclweb.net, RCL provides a list of core titles that are essential for undergraduate libraries.

We are currently seeking academic librarians and faculty with subject expertise in the following area: 
*Asian History, Languages, and Literatures

Referees will be responsible for comprehensively evaluating the RCL subject’s bibliographic content, along with its taxonomic organization. All referee work is scheduled for completion by January 1, 2013 and can be completed online and at your leisure. Referees will receive access to the RCL database to complete the review.

Call for presentations

4th China-Japan-Korea Library and Information Science Conference

November 30-December 1, 2012, Busan, Korea

 

Theme: Knowledge Organization: Issues and Trends


The Fourth China-Japan-Korea(CJK) Library and Information Science Conference organized by the  School of Information Resources Management, Renmin University of China, College of Knowledge and Library Sciences, University of Tsukuba, and the Department of Library, Archive and Information Studies of Pusan National University will take place in Busan, Korea during November 30-December 1, 2012

The main theme of the Symposium this year is “Knowledge Organization: Issues and Trends”.  The CJK Conference aims to bring together both researchers and information professionals to discuss the implications of various issues in library and information science.

Paper submission

Research papers must be written in English.  Presentations should be made in English, and will be limited to approximately 30 minutes plus 10-minute Q & A.  Either full paper or PowerPoint slides are to be accepted as a final draft and be included in the conference proceeding.  However, Presentation should be accompanied by PowerPoint slides.

Submit your proposal(up to 5 pages, doc, docx, pdf’s only) to the department email: july75@pnu.edu by 15th October 2012.  The submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee.  Authors will be contacted by 25th October 2012

Key Dates

Research proposal/Abstract submission: 15th October 2012.
Notification of acceptance: 25nd October 2012.
Final paper or PPT slides: 23rd November, 2012

The Conference will be held at Induk Hall located in Pusan National University, Busan, Korea. Accommodations for all presenters and commentators will be provided by the Department of Library, Archive and Information Studies, Pusan National University
